About

What is this blog?

Highly opinionated commentary on classical topics, mythology, literature, etc. And possible diversions into the modern day.

Why the name?

It derives from Elinor Wylie’s poem ‘Bronze Trumpets and Sea Water’, about the pitfalls of translating Latin into English. I chose it because the fact that even such a poet as Wylie, who was hardly a classicist, could write (and get published) a poem on such a subject in the early 20th century is a representation of one of my main points here — how rapidly we have become disconnected from our heritage of Western civilization stretching back to Rome and Greece (and through Christianity, to Israel), to our great detriment.
